Dear Howard University Community,

As we prepare for a robust Fall 2021 academic semester, we have been making a number of preparations to support the health and safety of the Howard University community. In order to obtain feedback regarding COVID-19 vaccination rates among students and employees, we have conducted two questionnaires (one for employees and a second for students) over the past several weeks. Among faculty and staff, a survey was distributed to over 3,100 employees. Thus far, 37 percent of employees have responded to the survey. Of that number, nearly 90 percent of employee respondents indicated that they have received a COVID-19 vaccine. Ninety-eight percent of that group indicated that they have either received both doses of a two-dose vaccine regimen (Moderna or Pfizer) or have received the single dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

Among students, nearly 4,700 responses have been received. Of this number, 87 percent of student respondents have received a COVID-19 vaccine. Further, as we continue to conduct COVID-19 testing on campus, this week marks the fifth consecutive week that there have been no positive COVID-19 tests among faculty, staff and students participating in this routine testing process. We are further encouraged that the negative COVID-19 testing is both an indication of the effectiveness of vaccines and the success of public health preventative measures that have been in place over the past 16 months.

As we continue to prepare for the Fall 2021 semester, we encourage all members of the Howard University community to receive a COVID-19 vaccine as soon as it is available to you. Please be reminded that every student as well as every faculty and staff member who is on campus for any reason should complete the daily BisonSafe app self-assessment, continue to wear a mask on campus in public areas, and adhere to the other outlined public health measures. Additionally, any student who will be on campus for any reason must complete the necessary COVID-19 vaccine regimen by August 1, 2021.
