Campus Visits

With the well-being of the entire Howard community serving as our guiding principle and top priority, students and staff planning to be on campus must present a negative COVID-19 result or be tested on campus prior to entry.

After initial testing, any member of the Howard University community who will be on campus for more than four hours in any given week must participate in the screening and testing regimen as outlined below.

All faculty, students and staff who will be on campus must download the Bison Safe app from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store and respond to the screening questions on a daily basis prior to entry to campus.

Information on testing for students, staff, faculty, contractors, vendors, and film crews can be found below.

Testing Information

Testing for Students

Students living in residential housing (Axis) will be tested twice weekly. A rolling testing schedule will be provided to facilitate daily testing through the Student Health Center.

Student-athletes will be tested three times weekly (the frequency of testing may be modified to comply with NCAA guidelines). A rolling testing schedule will be provided to facilitate daily testing through the Student Health Center.

Health professional students will be tested twice weekly. Students participating in clinical rotations must additionally adhere to the testing regimen outlined by the facility where training is being conducted. Several health professional schools, upon prior approval, have begun conducting local testing of their students, including the College of Dentistry, College of Nursing and Allied Health Sciences, and College of Medicine.

COVID-19 testing for students will continue in the Student Health Center by appointment (or at a distributed site planned for the near future) as outlined below during regular business hours:

  • Monday, Tuesday and Thursday: 8:30 a.m. - noon and 1:30 - 3 p.m.
  • Wednesday: 8:30 a.m. - 3 p.m.

Students may schedule appointments online using Signup Genius to log in and self-schedule. This sign-up link will be available through the rest of this semester and has the capacity to schedule all student groups on campus. Please call 202-806-7540 or email for additional information.

Any student or staff member who has symptoms or has had close contact with someone who has tested positive must get retested five to seven days after exposure, in coordination with Student Health Services (for students), their primary health care provider or Howard University Employee Health (for staff).

Students who develop symptoms of COVID-19 should immediately quarantine at home and contact the Student Health Center at 202-806-7540.

Testing for Faculty and Staff

Employees in the Health Professional Schools will be tested weekly. If they are engaged in activities at Howard University Hospital, they must adhere to the regimen outlined by HUH.

Employees in the non-Health Professional Schools will also be tested weekly. The frequency of testing of some employees may be recommended on a more frequent schedule, depending upon the level of interaction with other individuals, guests, contractors or visitors to campus.

Howard University employees may obtain COVID-19 testing at Howard University Hospital, Towers Building, Suite 3600, or at a distributed site in your college (planned for the near future).

The testing hours of operation are Monday – Thursday, 9 – 11:30 a.m. and 1 - 4 p.m., and Friday from 9 – 11:30 a.m.

The testing is conducted by appointment, and employees must present their Howard University ID. To schedule an appointment, please call 202-865-2107.

If you are tested somewhere other than employee or student health, email your positive or negative result to our secure COVID-19 test result email address:

We are using the “anterior nose” test. The tester uses a Q-tip in the front of your nostril and there is no discomfort during the test. There is no charge for the test.

For employees, if you develop symptoms of COVID-19, please do not come to the University and immediately quarantine at home. Call Howard University Employee Health at 202-865-2107, let them know that you are symptomatic, and make a same-day appointment with them for testing. Then inform your direct supervisor that you will be away from work for at least 1-2 days.

After your test, you should return home and await the results. Results of your COVID-19 test will be available within 24 hours. If your test is negative, you may return to work. If your test is negative, but you continue to have symptoms, we may ask you to quarantine for 10-14 days or to retest a few days later.

If you test positive for COVID-19, you will be required to quarantine for 10-14 days. When possible, you will be asked to work from home during this time. You will be retested after 10-14 days at Employee Health and can return to work once you have two negative test results over a 24-hour period.

If you have been in close contact with someone who tested positive for COVID-19, please call Employee Health to make an appointment for testing. The timing for testing should be 5-7 days after your first exposure to the positive individual. You may be asked to work from home while awaiting your test.

Contractors, Vendors and Film Crews

In order to ensure the safety of the Howard campus community, all University vendors who furnish employees coming onto one or more of the locations of the University must provide written certification that such employees have received a negative COVID-19 test result and that such employees have reviewed and agree to comply with all applicable elements of the University’s Fall 2020 Reopening Plan, including vendor guidelines. We have sent our campus vendors the attached protocol letter. If the company providing the contractor/vendor is conducting testing at a more frequent regimen than the University guidance, the more frequent regimen will be maintained and evidence of testing must be provided to the University office overseeing the work of the contractor/vendor.

Visiting film crew members are required to provide evidence of a negative COVID-19 test within seven days of coming to campus. This certification and any accompanying documents are to be submitted to the vice president of communications. Each request to film on campus is subject to approval by the Office of University Communications on a case-by-case basis.

The guidance provided above will be re-assessed on an ongoing basis by the Public Health team and our COVID-19 health professionals for adjustment if we observe an increase in the positivity rate, either on campus or in the neighboring jurisdictions. Thank you for your continued cooperation and vigilance as we keep our patients and our families safe.
